Lighter Review 2026: Zero Fees, Ethereum ZK Rollup and Trading Costs
DN platform review · Updated 11 October 2026
What Matters
Lighter is an Ethereum-based ZK rollup exchange, not a Solana perpetual DEX. Its published Standard account schedule is 0% maker and 0% taker. That does not make every account, order type or trading journey free. Read the current schedule.
What Lighter's architecture establishes
Lighter describes custom zero-knowledge infrastructure that proves order matching and liquidations and verifies proofs on Ethereum. The relevant distinction is between exchange execution and the chain that anchors verification. A familiar order-book interface does not make the venue a centralized exchange, and an Ethereum anchor does not make every operational dependency disappear.
For readers, the useful questions are concrete: how are orders processed, what is proven, how does the withdrawal path work, and what happens when an interface or service becomes unavailable? DN has reviewed documentation for this update; we have not independently reproduced every circuit or executed a funded withdrawal test.
Standard, Plus and Premium are different choices
| Account | Maker | Taker | Published taker latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 0% | 0% | 300 ms |
| Plus | 0.005% | 0.005% | 300 ms |
| Premium, no staking discount | 0.004% | 0.028% | 140 ms |
These are documented account settings, not DN's measured end-to-end latency. Premium discounts depend on staking. Check advanced-order charges and current account rules separately; this review does not promise that all activity on Standard costs zero.
Who should consider it?
Potential fit: eligible traders comparing ordinary order-book execution costs and willing to understand the account-tier trade-off. A manual trader and an automated strategy can have different priorities even when they trade the same asset.
Less suitable: readers who cannot explain margin and liquidation, need guaranteed access to funds, or require measured latency and capacity that this documentation review has not established. Check local eligibility in the official terms; wallet access is not universal authorization to use the service.
Custody and execution risks
Self-custody changes the trust model; it does not remove loss risk. Consider contract and circuit defects, signing mistakes, interface compromise, service availability, collateral management and liquidation. A zero explicit fee is also compatible with expensive execution when spreads, price impact or funding are unfavorable.
A sensible test plan records market, size, account type, order style and timestamp, then compares actual fills and total costs. Until that evidence exists, do not infer that this venue is always faster, safer or cheaper than an alternative.
The Signal
Lighter's strongest proposition is a choice between explicit trading cost and account performance. Standard's zero maker/taker schedule can appeal to ordinary manual traders, while other tiers charge for different access characteristics. The right comparison includes fills, funding and operational risk.
DN Lighter Account Cost Explorer
Estimate costs for one entry and one exit at the same notional. This is a scenario calculator, not a quote or prediction. Fee snapshot: 11 October 2026.
Defaults are illustrative. Positive funding means you pay; negative means you receive. Normalize your market's rate to eight hours. Include spread and slippage once in the combined input. Advanced-order fees, staking discounts and transfer costs are not automatically modeled.
Enter valid numbers within the stated ranges. No estimate is available for these inputs.
This does not estimate liquidation, collateral needs, PnL or realized execution. A negative modeled total means a net receipt under your assumptions, not guaranteed profit.
DN Evidence Block
Evidence period: public documentation checked 11 October 2026. Method: primary-source review of product structure and fee rules, with a reproducible scenario calculator. No funded trading, withdrawal-speed or stress-performance test was performed for this update.
Figures are dated documentation snapshots. The tool holds notional and assumptions constant; actual fills, changing funding, account settings and market conditions can produce different results. Any comparative ranking belongs to the separate DN Perpetual DEX Index and its published methodology.
DN Alpha Thesis
For this review, DN's decision rule is to choose a venue by the exact product and constraints of the trade: size, execution model, collateral, permissions and total cost. A prominent brand or one attractive fee row cannot answer all of those questions.

Frequently asked questions
Is Lighter built on Solana?
No. Lighter describes an Ethereum-based ZK rollup with custom proofs for matching and liquidations.
Is Lighter free to trade on?
The published Standard maker/taker schedule is zero. Paid tiers and other costs require separate checks; zero explicit fees are not zero total cost.
Is this a funded execution test?
No. This update is a primary-documentation review. The DN calculator uses stated fee snapshots and your assumptions.
