On-Chain Forex Execution Benchmark 2026: Can DeFi Compete With Traditional FX?
Evidence reviewed: 31 October 2026. Documentation-based comparison and scenario model; not a live execution test.
What Matters
No venue has earned a measured “best execution” verdict in this benchmark. A low commission is only one part of the price of moving FX or gold risk. Compare the executable entry and exit price at your size, financing over your holding period, market access and liquidation rules—not headline leverage.
- Major FX: the documented gTrade baseline is 3.4 basis points round trip; Vest now documents 0.3 basis points for two taker fills. Neither figure is a guaranteed all-in cost.
- Gold is not EUR/USD: gTrade’s documented round-trip fee is 7 basis points; Vest’s commodity taker fees total 0.5 basis points. Different reference instruments can create basis risk.
- Avantis is now documented as Veranta: its official documentation still describes zero RWA maker/taker commission during growth mode, not zero spread or financing.
- Ostium is not a promoted recommendation here. Its former first-place score and referral calls to action have been withdrawn. Public web availability does not establish commercial approval or user eligibility.
Evidence Block: What This Edition Can Actually Establish
| Evidence type | What was checked | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Official documentation | Gains fee schedule; Veranta documentation reached from the Avantis docs domain; Vest markets, contract specifications, terms and 30 October exchange notice. | That a quoted size will fill, that the terms apply to every account, or that published parameters have not changed. |
| Public operational signals | Gains public market catalogue, Vest current market documentation and market-page response, Veranta current docs, and Ostium’s Gateway website/trading-app shell. | Successful deposits, trade submission, withdrawals, uptime or unrestricted availability. No wallet was connected. |
| DN calculations | Dollar conversions of published baseline rates, hypothetical spread/holding scenarios and the calculator below. | Observed spreads, slippage, latency, realised returns or independently measured execution quality. |
| Not tested | No funded accounts, signed orders, paid APIs, deposits or trades. | No execution league table or numeric quality score is justified. |
Correction: this replaces the August edition’s 94/91/88/84 scores and outdated Vest 1-bp-per-side assumption. Those rankings were not supported by synchronized fill data. The useful cost framework and calculator are retained, with updated inputs and clearer limits.
The Synthetic Settlement Gap Still Matters
An on-chain EUR/USD derivative normally pays profit or loss in collateral; it does not deliver euros to pay a supplier. Likewise, a gold perpetual is not allocated bullion. Closing a derivative and receiving stablecoins is a different obligation from exchanging two fiat currencies or taking delivery of metal.
That is the synthetic settlement gap: faster collateral settlement does not demonstrate tighter execution, currency delivery, deposit protection or ownership of the reference asset. Stablecoin collateral also adds issuer, redemption, depeg, chain and smart-contract exposure. Self-custody before a trade does not eliminate the risk of collateral committed to a protocol.
Comparison: Choose the Execution Model, Not the Marketing Label
| Venue / reference | Useful distinction | Decision-critical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| gTrade / Gains | Oracle-priced exposure with vault settlement; public fee and impact rules. | FX liquidity impact can apply in low-liquidity sessions; financing and applicable early-close protections matter. Check the selected chain and pair. |
| Veranta (formerly Avantis) | Official docs describe USDC-vault-backed RWA exposure, external pricing/hedging routes and temporary zero RWA commission. | Published capacity and slippage examples are provider claims, not DN-tested fills. Terms and actual route eligibility remain unverified in this review. |
| Vest Markets | USDC cross-margin perpetuals; current contract rules distinguish mark price for liquidation from mid price for unrealised PnL. | Book execution, reference basis and cross-margin risk must be assessed together. FX is weekend-locked; “continuous infrastructure” is not continuous FX access. |
| Ostium / Gateway — neutral context only | The official site now foregrounds API infrastructure for professional/institutional users and links a trading interface. | No promoted signup, current retail-access endorsement or modelled fee preset in this edition. A reachable app shell is not a completed operational test. |
| Traditional broker / deliverable FX | Retain as a genuine alternative, especially when the objective is fiat delivery or a locally available regulated account. | Account entity, product, commission, spread, financing, custody and withdrawal terms differ. Retail derivative pricing is not institutional spot-FX depth. |
Primary evidence: Gains execution documentation, Veranta documentation, Vest contract specifications, Ostium Gateway. These are neutral source links, not referral links.
Transparent Costs at $10,000, $100,000 and $1 Million
All amounts below are USD-equivalent notional, not collateral. One basis point is 0.01%; multiply notional by bps ÷ 10,000. Assume identical entry/exit notional, standard published fees, no rebates and no price movement. Dollar figures are arithmetic examples, not assertions that these sizes are available.
| Published component, round trip | bps | $10,000 | $100,000 | $1,000,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| gTrade major FX: fees + fixed spread | 3.4 | $3.40 | $34 | $340 |
| gTrade XAU/USD: fees | 7 | $7 | $70 | $700 |
| Vest FX: taker entry + taker exit | 0.3 | $0.30 | $3 | $30 |
| Vest gold/commodities: two taker fills | 0.5 | $0.50 | $5 | $50 |
| Veranta RWA commission during growth mode | 0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
Gains’ fee schedule specifies major-FX fees of 0.012% each side plus 0.005% fixed spread each side, and XAU/USD fees of 0.035% each side with no fixed spread. Its FX low-liquidity session can add impact; profitable quick closes may face a protection factor where liquidity impact applies. Holding fees combine funding and borrowing. These baselines exclude those variable components.
Vest’s markets page lists 0.15-bp FX taker fees and 0.25-bp commodity taker fees per fill, with zero maker fees. Its 30 October 2026 notice corroborates the FX reduction. Maker execution is not guaranteed: a resting order may never fill or may fill just before an adverse move. The table assumes taker/taker, not a free maker round trip.
Veranta’s current documentation states that RWA commission is waived during growth mode and that spread and carry are passed through its external market structure. A zero in the commission row must never be read as zero total cost.
Why the Lowest Fee Need Not Be the Cheapest Trade
For a deliberately hypothetical $100,000 trade, Venue A charging zero commission and 4 bps of total entry-plus-exit spread/impact costs $40. Venue B charging 0.3 bps commission and 1 bp spread/impact costs $13. Reverse their observed spreads and the conclusion can reverse. Neither scenario is a quote from the named platforms.
A 10% annualised net holding cost for three days adds approximately $82.19 on $100,000, using simple accrual and a 365-day year. That can dominate the commission difference. At 20x leverage, $100,000 notional corresponds to $5,000 initial collateral before fees: a $50 charge is 1% of that collateral. Leverage changes the margin burden, not the dollar fee on unchanged notional.
Traditional FX: Compare Like Units
FOREX.com’s US cost page provides a neutral example of spread-only and RAW accounts, with the latter advertising $7 commission per $100,000 traded. If that rate applies separately to entry and exit, commission is $14 round trip on equal $100,000 notionals, before spread and financing. “As low as” spreads are minimum advertisements, not average execution.
Do not compare a 100,000-EUR lot directly with $100,000 notional without converting at the reference FX rate. For EUR/USD, a one-pip move is $10 on 100,000 EUR; converting that into basis points requires the EUR/USD price. Keep the broker’s legal entity and product fixed throughout the comparison.
FX and Gold Require Different Checks
For FX, normalize the pair direction: USD/JPY and JPY/USD are inverses, not interchangeable prices. Record base units, quote currency, dollar-equivalent size, timestamp and reference mid. Compare the same direction and market session.
For gold, identify whether the contract references spot XAU/USD or a futures contract. Vest lists a GC-PERP roll schedule and explains internal price adjustments at rolls. A spot-versus-futures price gap is not automatically slippage; it can reflect carry and contract basis. Compare like references before calling either price better.
For either market, an oracle price is not itself an executable quote. A displayed maximum order size or open-interest capacity is not a promise of immediate liquidity. At $1 million, request or inspect the full size-aware quote and exit assumptions, not a small-trade price multiplied by ten.
Use the Cost Model
The retained calculator now offers separate FX and gold presets plus an editable custom baseline. Enter total expected entry-plus-exit spread/impact not already included in the baseline; the gTrade major-FX preset already includes its fixed round-trip spread. Enter net holding cost after any funding received. A zero input means “assumed zero,” not “measured free.”
DN On-Chain Forex Cost Model
Estimate execution and holding cost on a forex perpetual. Enter the observed round-trip spread or expected price impact yourself so the model does not assume a live market quote.
Static fallback: if this page does not activate the calculator, use: total USD = notional × (baseline bps + additional spread/impact bps) ÷ 10,000 + notional × annual holding % ÷ 100 × days ÷ 365 + gas. At $100,000, 3.4 bps baseline, 0 additional bps, 0% holding and $0.50 gas, the result is $34.50. The table above works without JavaScript.
Presets checked 31 October 2026: gTrade major FX 3.4 bps includes fixed spread; gold 7 bps fees. Vest FX 0.3 bps and gold 0.5 bps assume two taker fills. Veranta RWA 0 bps commission is temporary growth-mode pricing. All exclude variable costs not explicitly included. Edit baseline for your actual quote. Zero spread or holding inputs are assumptions, not live measurements. Simple holding accrual uses 365 days; negative holding rates represent credits. This model neither fetches prices nor predicts liquidation.
Eligibility Comes Before Price
Opening a public website, connecting a wallet, possessing a referral code or seeing “no KYC” is not legal eligibility. Check residence, citizenship, physical location, entity status, sanctions and the exact product’s current terms before funding. Do not use a VPN to circumvent restrictions.
Vest’s terms, dated 23 March 2026, prohibit persons connected to specified jurisdictions including the United States and United Kingdom; the definition is broader than residence alone. The list also includes Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Russia and Syria. Funded-account products have additional terms and are not equivalent to trading your own collateral.
Current jurisdiction eligibility for Gains, Veranta and Ostium was not established for any particular reader in this review. That is an unresolved gate—not permission by default. Vest’s market-hours rules also warn that weekend-locked positions cannot be adjusted or closed until reopening. Market closures and gaps matter even when the blockchain runs continuously.
Risk Checklist Before Any Execution Comparison
- Liquidation: inspect maintenance margin, mark/oracle rules, fees, gaps and whether funding moves the liquidation threshold. A stop order is not a guaranteed fill.
- Cross margin: losses on one position can consume collateral supporting another. Isolated and cross-margin accounts are not risk-equivalent.
- Infrastructure: consider oracle delays, chain/sequencer outages, keeper/relayer failures, withdrawal restrictions, smart-contract exploits and administrative controls.
- Collateral: check the exact stablecoin contract, native versus bridged assets, issuer risk and conversion costs.
- Counterparty and legal recourse: on-chain records do not guarantee execution, solvency, compensation or effective dispute remedies.
Methodology and Limitations
This is a documented-cost comparison, not a performance ranking. Sources were reviewed on 31 October 2026; provider claims remain provider claims. No synchronized bid/ask samples, book-depth captures, order receipts, transaction hashes or withdrawal tests were collected. Published rates can change, and different chains, account tiers, order types and instruments may use different parameters.
For a reproducible future measurement, record instrument/reference, UTC timestamp, market session, direction, USD notional, collateral, chain, order type, quoted entry, requested slippage tolerance, quoted exit, fee breakdown, net holding rate and rejected/partial fills. Benchmark each execution against a contemporaneous reference mid, preserving fees separately so spread is not double-counted. Report sample count, median and adverse-tail costs—not just the best quote.
The calculator uses simple annualised holding accrual, not changing block-by-block rates, compounding, liquidation simulation or a forecast of market movements. It cannot model every fee protection, borrow regime, bridge route or profitable-trade fee. Use custom inputs for those cases. Dollar costs are not trading losses from price moves.
Sources and Commercial Disclosure
The linked official fee pages, market specifications, exchange notices and terms above are the primary evidence for this edition. DN’s current partner registry was also checked separately from platform documentation. Historical referral destinations have been removed from this edition where current promotional status or destination verification was unresolved; no affiliate signup links are used here. Neutral coverage does not depend on an affiliate relationship, and absence of a referral link is not a finding that a platform has ceased operating.
The Bottom Line
Compare total executable cost for the same risk—not the word “decentralised,” a zero-fee banner or a leverage ceiling. At meaningful size, spread, financing, reference basis, market closure and account eligibility can outweigh the headline fee. Until synchronized fills exist, a transparent model with explicit unknowns is more useful than a precise-looking execution score.
